VALEDICTION FOR THE BIRDS

A long time ago, on Yelium's Peak,
a candle and compass in my hands,
I beheld the sight of a thousand larks.
They flittered there, in a giant cage,
crafted of grief and guilt and wrath,
and I thought it would be a kindness if I
bent wide the bars and let them home.
So I whispered to them their desires
till their serenity welled and the birds flew free,
knowing at last where they were meant to go.
Into the sky, they disappeared.
